We are looking for members who have mobility problems for a unit in our housing cooperative.
This is a second floor, 2 bedroom unit in a building with an elevator. The unit was designed for residents in wheelchairs and has accessibility features such as;
- Kitchen designed for those in wheelchairs
- Wide hallways and doors
- A “wet room” bathroom (shower, no tub) with grab bars
- Slanted grab bars by the toilet
- Lowered peephole in the main door
- Underground parking.

Housing Cooperatives in BC require the purchase of shares. The share purchase for this unit is $1,900. Many credit unions are willing to finance these at low interest. MSDSI (provincial disability) also can “finance” these for those on PWD.
The monthly housing charge for a 2 Bedroom Unit is $1,015.
We are going to have an increase in the housing charges in the next several years as a result of an extensive renovation of the building’s envelope (as we are a “leaky” building and are going to be fixing this) The membership is still deciding, but likely ~12% in the next 3 years.
A subsidy through BC Housing may be available for low income people / people on various disability programs – please let us know in your application if you will need this. If you are eligible for a subsidy, you pay less rent (rent is geared to income, if you’re on PWD, it will probably be around $320 a month per person) and you may also be eligible for a BC Hydro Credit of ~$36. Our operating agreement runs until 2022, after which these subsidies may no longer be available.
Electricity costs will depend on your usage, but I live next door in a 2 bedroom with a roommate and our hydro bill is approximately $60 a month during the winter. There are no other utilities to pay for as hot water, etc is included.
We require tenants to purchase renters insurance ($1 million liability). Price depends on your needs / situation / insurance company, but it can be usually purchased for around $20-30 a month.
Our coop has mandatory participation (helping out with the coop for a few hours a month) but we will work with our members depending on their needs and limitations.
